Abstract as published by the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) by Naftali TS Gordon

The use of K-9 explosive detection has proverbially come to the front of the fight against terrorist organizations; international and homegrown. Federal, state and local law enforcement entities as well as research institutions are incorporating previously standard explosive K-9 searches into the cutting edge K-9 detection capabilities which include "vapor wake" K-9's for high targeted areas and large number of people. K-9 operations provide for a mobile, 24/7 solution to explosive detection with the added value of deterrence. It has become more evident that technology provides only a rigid layer whereas a dog provides a multi-faceted and evolving ability in the threat against terrorism.
