The use of inert explosives
Designed to optimize and streamline the security training process
Explosives are widely used by terrorist and criminal elements in a variety of environments, necessitating the training of security manpower to effectively detect their presence and remove the threat.
Inert explosives (simulants) were developed primarily to support the training of security agents and operators of explosives detection systems. They comprise inert substances that share some or all of the chemical and/or physical properties of the actual explosive materials they represent: appearance, texture, odor, density, Zeff, CT number, etc. Due to their nonhazardous nature, they do not require special, secure storage and transport conditions, and enable to conduct training based on realistic scenarios in the actual work environment, yet without incurring the risks associated with the handling of explosives. These important advantages render the training process much more effective, as well as easier to implement.
Inert explosives (simulants) are primarily used to train security agents performing manual checks aimed at detecting explosive materials, most often within the context of aviation security. The simulants assist the agents to become familiar with the visual and tactile properties of various explosive materials and easily recognize them during the course of their work.
The training of operators of detection systems such as X-ray and EDS includes concealing explosives simulants in baggage and other personal belongings, to replicate real-life scenarios they may encounter in their work as closely as possible. The operators learn to distinguish the concealed simulants by detecting their images on their screens, even when hidden among other items.
Explosives simulants are used in exercises carried out by regulators and airport authorities as well, to preserve the operation of the security setup at a constantly high state of alertness. Such "red team" exercises also comprise a fundamental component of airports' quality assurance program.
Canine (K-9) units also use simulants for training the canines and handlers to work well as a team and detect explosives quickly and maximize success rates.
Other trainee populations using explosives simulants include security agents stationed at secured sites, EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) units and other law enforcement personnel.
Additionally, explosives simulants are essential for the calibration of advanced technological detection systems, such as EDS and TDS. They are used to verify that these systems are indeed capable of detecting the predefined threats - in terms of type of explosive material and quantity, in their actual work environment, yet without subjecting the calibration team and others found at the airport to the risks of working with real explosives. Calibration is required periodically to ensure the desired level of performance is continuously maintained.
Law enforcement
Law enforcement bodies, such as the police and federal agencies, may utilize X-TEST products to improve their level of knowledge of explosive materials and IEDs, as well as of the manner in which they are prepared. The use of X-TEST products allows the above bodies to gain more in-depth understanding of the adversary's capabilities and mode of operation, and enhances their level of operational preparedness. Additionally, these products may be used to instruct the community on practicing preventive behavior and to increase its level of awareness, thus assisting to thwart terror attacks.
Aviation & Transportation security
The unique, broad line of high quality X-TEST products assist security managers and regulatory bodies responsible for land transportation systems, seaports and airports to deliver training, conduct exercises and test the security system being implemented. X-TEST products have been developed to look and feel as authentic as possible, and to enable enacting scenarios that are extremely close to real life situations. Consequently, they allow security personnel to become familiar with various explosives and IEDs and learn to identify then in a civilian and commercial environment.
EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
X-TEST's line of products allows EOD units to use inert materials and other IED components that are identical to real detonators and initiators, without assuming any security risk whatsoever. The high quality line of products, which closely simulates the actual explosives and related items, allows a great deal of flexibility in constructing IEDs compatible with the units' operational doctrine.
High-Security facilities
The terror attacks of the last decade have led numerous facilities to implement independent security check systems. These systems include, among others, metal detection devices, X-ray screening machines and various procedures. The use of X-TEST products can enhance the level of preparedness of the security personnel at secured facilities and raise their level of familiarity with IEDs and explosives and improve their understanding of the adversary's modus operandi.
